Mies van der Rohe was the last director of the Bauhaus before the Nazis closed the school and he fled to America. The Knoll Barcelona® Chair was designed to provide a comfortable break for the King of Spain as he visited the German Pavilion at the International Exposition of 1929. Although an exemplar of the machine style, the chair is largely hand-made: the cushions are made from 148 separate pieces of leather and the chromed stainless steel frame is hand buffed to a mirror finish. The Knoll Barcelona® Chair is one of the most imitated designs of all time. Authenticity is guaranteed by the company logo engraved on the right leg.

    Lounge chair with base in steel hand-ground and hand-buffed to a mirror finish.
    Seat belting straps made from cowhide, with seat and back pad in urethane foam with dacron polyester fibrefill, upholstered with 40 individual panels of leather which are hand cut, welted and tufted with leather and buttons made from a single hide.
